In the Puranas and scriptures, there is a special mention of Mahamrityunjaya Mantra for averting incurable diseases and avoiding premature death. Sage-Munis have called the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra to be the heart of the Vedas. It is also known as the Mrit-Sanjivani mantra, because it is believed that this is an element of the life restoring knowledge gained by the sage Shukra (Venus) after strict austerity and penance. Owing to Shiva’s three eyes, the name Trayambak-mantra has also been ascribed to it. This is called Rudra Mantra, drawing from the ferocious attribute of Shiva. This mantra has many names and is polymorphic. This great mantra dedicated to Shiva as a mortal can also be found in the Rigveda. Mahamrityunjaya Mantra is found in the Shukla Yajurveda. Like the Gayatri Mantra it is one of the most widely known mantra of Sanatan Dharma. In this mantra, Shiva has been described as ‘the vanquisher of death’.
